Dormans Park was laid out with generous plots of Scots and Corsican pine over a century ago, and many of those trees are now well past the height they were originally planted to reach, with narrow root plates in shallow, often waterlogged clay. When a pine grows tall and single-stemmed without any thinning around it, it presents a large sail to the wind on a root system that isn't built to resist it.

Crown reduction and selective removal within a stand, taking out the worst-placed trees to relieve pressure on the rest, is usually the sensible route rather than felling everything, but it needs assessing tree by tree because pines respond badly to over-thinning done all at once.

The clay across most of Lingfield holds water for long periods after rain, and waterlogged clay gives far less anchorage to a root plate than free-draining soil. Trees that seem perfectly stable in a dry summer can lean or shift noticeably after a wet winter, particularly shallow-rooted species like pine and some ornamental conifers.
