Method And Targets: How A Lateral Reduction Is Actually Planned

A lateral reduction lives or dies on getting the target distance and the balance of the remaining crown right. Here is how that is worked out on site.

Setting the clearance target

The first job on site is establishing exactly what clearance is needed and from what, a set distance from a wall or roofline, statutory clearance from an overhead line as specified by the network operator, a boundary line agreed with a neighbour, or headroom over a shared drive. That figure drives every cut that follows; without it, a lateral reduction is just guesswork.

Clearance is rarely a flat, straight cut across the affected side.
